As a member-driven organization, members are encouraged to participate and get involved with the union. At both the provincial and regional level of leadership, various positions have been established to provide accountable, responsible and effective leadership of the membership.

Provincial Executives
POSITION OVERVIEW
In partnership with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the Chief Operating Officer (COO), is responsible for building the power of the union by ensuring effective strategic directions, operations, member representation, advocacy, and public and government relations. As part of the Council Board (consisting of Provincial Executive and Regional Council members), shares a fiduciary responsibility for the funds and assets of the organization. Participates with Council in decision-making for the organization through sound Governance practices including the ability to manage risk and foster a culture of excellence.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Establishes direction, priorities and strategies in support of union strength

As Provincial Treasurer, oversees the financial management of the British Columbia Nurses’ Union (BCNU) ensuring the allocation of resources supports the Union’s goals and its financial health. As part of the Council Board (consisting of Provincial Executive and Regional Council members), shares a fiduciary responsibility for the funds and assets of the organization. Participates with Council in decision-making for the organization through sound Governance practices including the ability to manage risk and foster a culture of excellence.

Regional Executives
POSITION OVERVIEW
In partnership with the President and Council, works to advance the interests of the membership by ensuring effective strategic directions, operations, member representation, advocacy and public and government relations. Provides leadership to, and collaborates with, the Regional Executive Team to develop the Regional Operations Plan. Ensures that the region is aware of BCNU’s vision, mission and strategic directions. As part of the Council Board (consisting of Provincial Executive and Regional Council members), shares a fiduciary responsibility for the funds and assets of the organization. Participates with Council in decision-making for the organization through sound Governance practices including the ability to manage risk and foster a culture of excellence. Acts as a steward in the region.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Responsible for executing the mandate for the region

Chairs meetings of the region and the Regional Executive

Provides leadership in the development of the Regional Executive and stewards within the region and in building future leadership

Ensures the annual regional budget and regional audit are submitted by region
-
Responsible for auditing and supervising regional union expenditures. This includes oversight of the logs of the Regional Executive members and review of the Budget vs Actual regional financial report on a planned schedule (minimum quarterly)

Responsible to coordinate and facilitate the annual regional planning session, incorporating the provincial Strategic Directions
-
Responsible for oversight of day-to-day operations of the region and implementing decisions and actions of Council
-
Represents the BCNU to the members and others in the region
-
Encourages the recruitment of new members, stewards and Regional Executives within the region, and fosters participation of retired members and students
-
Actively seeks feedback from the membership during site visits and report out sessions
-
Maintains accountability for time spent on union activities

Performs other duties as determined by the Regional Executive Team and Council

POSITION OVERVIEW
As a member of the Regional Executive Team, actively participates in executive planning and decision making for the region, and participates in the execution of the Regional Operations Plan. Acts as a resource and/or mentor for stewards within the region. Provides coaching, education and counselling regarding Professional Responsibility Process (PRP) best practices. Is an advocate of the PR Guiding Principles and processes. One of the primary objectives of this role is to ensure nurses’ ability to maintain their professional standards. Acts as a steward in the region.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Ensures effective member relations and communications

Supports safe patient/client/resident care and safe nursing practice at the worksite

Problem-solves to address nurses' concerns related to patient/resident/client care and professional practice problems, which includes any practice problem related to the Nursing Standards of Practice of the provincial regulatory body

Advises stewards and the membership about existing PRP resources and the Professional Practice page on the BCNU website
-
Uses a standardized computer template to document consultations with members, BCNU leadership, the Health Authority Professional Practice Office (PPO) and other employer representatives; and monitor progress of professional practice problems

Advises stewards and members to navigate professional practice problems as required according to Article 60, Article 32 and/or the PRP Memorandum of Agreement (MOA)

Reports regularly at Regional meetings on PRP activities across the Region and updates on provincial directives

Directs PRP focus groups at Regional meetings

Liaises with BCNU Professional Practice Officers and collaborates on priorities for regional plans

Maintains accountability for time spent on union activities

POSITION OVERVIEW

Conducts the financial business of the region in accordance with the BCNU’s and the region’s financial policies, and acts as a steward in the region.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Contributes to the financial health of the region by ensuring the successful implementation of strategies and priorities in a responsible manner

Maintains an accurate account of all funds received and expended by the region

Reviews and approves Member Salary Reimbursement and Expenses in a timely manner ensuring all expenses approved adhere to the BCNU financial policies

Uses financial accounting system to create purchase orders for expenditures and approve invoices

Presents a financial report, worksite report and executive hour report (minimum quarterly) to the regional executive

Reports to and provides Regional Council Member(s) with information and documentation which allows the Regional Council Member(s) to supervise regional expenditures

Actively engages in mentorship of stewards and is a contact for members in worksites without stewards.
