Biography

Meghan Friesen was appointed Interim Executive Councillor for Pensions and Seniors Health in December 2023.

Meghan has been a registered nurse for 30 years. She began her nursing career in Ontario before moving to BC to work at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver. Throughout her career, Meghan has worked in many areas of nursing, including med./surg., cardiac surgery, cardiac medicine, cardiac ICU and research. She has been a clinical nurse leader and clinical site coordinator.

Meghan started her union advocacy in 2009 following an injury and a WorkSafeBC claim process where BCNU helped her win a successful appeal. She wanted to get involved in union work as a way to give back and support other nurses.

Meghan has been a full-time steward, a temporary labour relations officer and has served on the Nurses’ Bargaining Association (NBA) Provincial Bargaining Committee. She was first elected regional council member for Vancouver Metro in August 2014. She was acclaimed as the regional council member for the Vancouver Metro in 2023 before assuming her current interim executive councillor role.

In her current role, Friesen serves as chair of the NBA Retiree Benefits Program (RBP) Committee and chair of the Seniors Strategy Committee.

Meghan lives in North Vancouver on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish) and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil Waututh) nations with her husband and two dogs. She has three grown sons and loves spending time with family. She also loves to hike and spend time around the North Shore.
