BCNU Stands with Indigenous Peoples

February 16, 2018
The BC Nurses' Union offers its condolences to the family of Colten Boushie of the Red Pheasant Cree Nation, who was shot and killed by Saskatchewan farmer, Gerald Stanley in August 2016.

The tragic death of Mr. Boushie reminds us of the need to recommit ourselves to the principles of justice and equity. Indigenous peoples face profound challenges to their health and well-being due to the ongoing legacies of colonialism, racialization and a political and legal process that has failed to address these needs.

BCNU calls on all levels of government to engage in genuine consultation with Indigenous peoples in order to comprehensively address these inequities. Government must also commit to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action and the full implementation of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Persons.

We will continue to stand up for the rights, health and well-being of Indigenous peoples and will continue to work with all communities and allies towards this end.
