Black History Month
It was officially recognized by the House of Commons in 1995, following a motion introduced by the first black Canadian woman elected to Parliament, the Honourable Jean Augustine. While there are some who critique the idea of consigning the history of a people to a single month, others see it as an opportunity to reflect on the past and present contributions and realities of a profoundly diverse community of people, who have had a presence in what we now call Canada since the 1600s. Please take a few moments to click on the links below to discover more about the history of Black people in BC and beyond - as well as various commemorative events taking place around the province.
