The Cost of Unsafe Work Conditions

April 28th is the National Day of Mourning in Canada. The Day honours the memory of workers who have been killed, injured or suffered an illness as a result of a work-related incident. To commemorate the Day of Mourning, events will be held across BC on April 28th; fallen workers will be remembered and honoured.

In BC there were 175 fatalities in 2014, up from the 128 in 2013. That is more than 3 people each week who lost their lives while doing their job.

Health Care is Not an Exception

  • WorkSafeBC accepted 14,446 health care claims in 2014
  • In 2014, WorkSafe BC accepted 487 health care workers permanent disability claims due to injury or occupational disease
  • From 2005 - 2014, WorkSafeBC has reported 26 deaths among healthcare professionals
  • In 2014 - three healthcare workers died from work-related causes
