Day of Mourning April 28

April 25, 2017
The cost of unsafe work conditions

April 28 is the National Day of Mourning in Canada. This day honours the memory of workers who have been killed, injured or suffered an illness as a result of a work-related incident. To commemorate the Day of Mourning, events will be held across BC on April 28, when fallen workers will be remembered and honoured.

Last year, 144 BC workers lost their lives from a workplace injury or disease, a number that represents over two people every week.

Health care is a high-risk sector

  • Across Canada, health care and social services (HCSS) have the highest number of time-loss injury claims.
  • In BC, there were 8,942 claims and four deaths of workers in HCSS.
  • Musculoskeletal injury claims from overexertion or repetitive motion accounted for 43 percent of claims in this subsector.
  • WorkSafeBC statistics show that accepted time-loss claims related to acts of violence have been steadily increasing over the last six years.

Safety is our top priority

We can all commit to building a culture where health and safety is the priority. Let's honour the memory of fallen workers by committing to work together to prevent injuries, illnesses, violence, and fatalities in the workplace.

Safe and healthy health care workplaces are foundational to a system of safe, sustainable, high quality patient care.
