ARNBC Members Campaign to Change Fees and Collection Practices

February 20, 2018
Organizers say membership fees should be determined by and only collected from those nurses who are ARNBC members

Members of the Association of Registered Nurses of BC (ARNBC) have launched a campaign to change the association's bylaws. The effort stems from ongoing concerns about the way the ARNBC sets its annual membership fee and collection practices. The members' proposed bylaw amendments, if passed, will mean that ARNBC members will have the final say on any annual fee greater than $1.00, and will ensure that fees are only collected from members. Currently, the annual fee is $110.55 and is paid by all RNs when they renew their registration with the College of Registered Nurses of BC (CRNBC), regardless of whether they are members of ARNBC.

ARNBC collects fees from all practicing registered nurses, even those who are not ARNBC members. When a practicing RN pays their annual registration fee to CRNBC, over 20 percent of the fee paid is automatically transferred to ARNBC without the nurse's consent, even if the nurse has opted out of being a member.

BCNU supports the rights of all of its members who are also ARNBC members to exercise their rights under ARNBC's bylaws to help bring about change. It is important that members inform themselves about this important issue.
