$90,000 raised to support people with mental illness at Clara's Big Ride event
The BCNU-sponsored event was held at the Kettle Society's new housing facility on Burrard Street.
In a speech to about 200 people, BCNU President Debra McPherson congratulated Clara on her ride across Canada to raise awareness about mental illness.
"We strongly believe mental illness will only be de-stigmatized if we start talking more openly about it," said McPherson, noting BCNU has recently launched a mental health strategy.
The Kettle Society supports people living with mental illness by providing over 3600 people with a range of services, including a mental health drop-in, transition house for women and over 200 units of supported housing.
All funds raised at the gala will go directly to services for clients, including:
- Tenant move-in kits - bedding, kitchen ware, and bathroom supplies for previously homeless individuals
- Kettle meal programs
- Homeless "Stay Dry" kits - includes sleeping bag, tarp, socks, knapsack
- Dignity kits - towel, soap, shampoo, razors for use in Kettle drop-in free showers for the homeless
