BCNU says no to cuts to healthcare for refugees

May 30, 2013
Join the national Day of Action on June 17

BCNU strongly supports our members' participation in opposing the changes to the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP), which severely cut healthcare coverage for refugees in Canada. The cuts, which came into effect on July 1, 2012, now deny healthcare coverage for refugees unless their medical condition is deemed an issue of "public health and safety". In other words, refugees will only have healthcare costs covered if they are a threat to the health of Canadians, but not in danger of dying themselves.

June 17, 2013 is the National Day of Action in response to the IFHP cuts. Major protests are being planned across the country by healthcare workers, advocates for refugees and the general public. BCNU members are encouraged to participate in local events supporting the Day of Action. A rally is planned for Vancouver on June 17 at noon in front of the regional Citizenship and Immigration office at 1148 Hornby Street.

Nurses cannot stand by while some of the most vulnerable in our society are denied basic healthcare services for urgent and acute medical needs such as prenatal care and childbirth, a heart attack, or if they are suicidal. Cutting refugee claimants off from primary and preventative healthcare is an unacceptable way to address problems in Canada's immigration system.

Members can learn more about the changes to the IFHP and find out details about opportunities to support the National Day of Action at http://www.doctorsforrefugeecare.ca/the-issue.html.
