Labour Board ruling addresses process for determining union representation for LPNs in the Nurses' Bargaining Association

August 16, 2013
Majority principles will apply when determining union representation at employer affiliate worksites

The B.C. Labour Relations Board today issued its ruling regarding union representation for LPNs working in employer-affiliated worksites across the province. The ruling has confirmed that all LPNs are members of the Nurses' Bargaining Association, regardless of where they are employed.

The LRB decision applies majority principles regarding union representation, ruling that all nurses at each affiliate worksite must be represented by one union. The union will be selected either by a vote or by majority membership numbers.

The union is currently reviewing the LRB ruling to assess the specific impact for BCNU members at each affiliate worksite.

BCNU is fundamentally committed to uniting all nurses in one strong union and to ensuring that nurses have a choice in determining their representation. After reviewing the impact of the decision, we will take any remaining steps that are necessary to ensure that nurses who want to be represented by BCNU have a right to vote.

All impacted BCNU members - both RNs and LPNs - will be provided with further information early next week.
