April 28 - National Day of Mourning
Each year on April 28, Canadians observe our National Day of Mourning to honour the memory and lives of workers in Canada who were killed or injured on the job or suffered illness due to injury or exposure. During the current COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever to raise your voice and ensure that your personal safety and that of your patients and colleagues remains the number one priority of employers.
Last year, 140 workers in BC lost their lives on the job. Please join a moment of silence at 10:30 am on Tuesday, April 28 - go to dayofmourning.bc.ca and spend time in silence and in solidarity with others, in memory of those who are now gone.
To amplify your act of remembrance, please identify and report any hazards in your worksite to your immediate supervisor or manager. You may also contact your BCNU Occupational Health and Safety representative, or your regional executive, to talk about how to keep your worksite as safe and healthy as possible.
The cost of unsafe worksites is the lives of workers lost in the workplace, or the injuries they suffer. We remember them on Canada's National Day of Mourning, and always.
To look up who your BCNU Occupational Health and Safety representative is in your workplace or any other member of your regional executive, log in to the BCNU Member Portal and look under 'contacts'.
