Important Information for Retired and Employed Student Nurses

March 29, 2020
Retired Nurses and Employed Student Nurses who wish to work during the COVID-19 health crisis are urged to register with BCCNP*

British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals* (BCCNP) is asking recently retired and employed student nurses to register to work in order to maintain nursing resources throughout the pandemic. Registration will be valid for 90 days and, should the crisis continue past this point, registration may be extended at the discretion of BCCNP*.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Retired Nurses

Recently retired current non-practicing LPNs, RNs, RPNs, and NPs in good standing who can demonstrate they meet the following mandatory practice hour requirements:

  • LPNs: 1,125 hours within the last five years;
  • RNs: 1,125 hours within the last five years;
  • RPNs: 1,400 hours within the last five years;
  • NPs; 900 hours within the last five years.

Employed Student Nurses

BCCNP* is temporarily waiving the mandatory requirement for students to complete Form 10.1.

Student applicants MUST have a job offer. Without an employer, you will not be eligible for the employed student nurse registration. Your employer can confirm your position with the College directly by email at register@bccnp.ca which will then work directly with your school to confirm your employment status.

Who should not apply?

In addition to the specific guidelines set out above, please do not apply if:

  • You are not a current resident of BC.
  • You are an Internationally Educated Nurse not yet registered with the College and/or don't meet the hours worked requirement.
  • Your record with the College includes evidence of not meeting the good character, fitness or competence to practice requirements.
  • You have not yet passed the exam for the nursing role you would be applying into. (You may however be eligible for PROVISIONAL registration if the exam is the only requirement outstanding)
  • You have outstanding Inquiry Committee matters.
  • You have previously been denied registration.

Please do not apply for this temporary registration unless you meet all the criteria. This will help the College uphold professional requirements and ensure front line staff are able to practice safely and knowledgeably during this crisis.

If you are eligible to temporarily register to work either as a recently retired member or a employed student nurse, please fill in your application form online and email it directly to: register@bccnp.ca.

BCNU will continue to update members via eNews and on the COVID-19 FAQ and resource webpage as the situation evolves.
