Recognize, Thank and Celebrate Nurses During National Nursing Week 2020

May 08, 2020
Activities planned throughout May 11-17 to honour nurses

In honour of BCNU members during National Nursing Week there are several activities to participate in, watch and listen for:

Proclamation
2020 is a significant year for nurses around the world as this is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale and for the first time in history the World Health Organization globally declared it the Year of the Nurse and Midwife. BCNU, along with other nursing organizations requested that the BC government recognize the importance of nurses. Please see the Provincial Government's National Nursing Week Proclamation.

"COLLEAGUES CARE" Contest: May 8-17
Members are invited to participate in a contest by sharing, in 200 characters or less*, why they feel grateful for a nurse or nursing colleague(s). Prizes will be randomly awarded, starting with two daily draws from May 11-17. Plus, there will be one random winner awarded the grand prize ? a choice of an iPad, or a smartwatch!

Product Giveaways
Some provincial and regional executives have been busy packaging gift bags with various donated items. Each region has something a little bit different.

BC Nurses' Union Fund raised $13,288.10
It is wonderful to see British Columbian's celebrate health care and essential workers at the nightly 7 pm cheer. See the thank you ad that BCNU has created in response. Watching nurses get recognized and appreciated as the highly skilled and dedicated professionals that we are is inspiring. Many British Columbian's have also reached out to BCNU asking how they can honour nurses. We have invited them to match BC nurses' donation to the BC Nurses' Union Fund held at the Vancouver Foundation. All donations made until May 17 go to Food Banks of BC to aid in the increase in food insecurity the residents of BC are experiencing through the COVID-19 pandemic. If you, your friends and family are interested and able to donate, click here.

Facebook Frames
Starting today, BCNU has released two National Nursing Week Facebook profile frames. One frame especially for nurses reads "Proud to be a Nurse", as well as another one that shares the theme for this year's National Nursing Week, "Nursing the World to Health". They will be available until May 17.

Our Nurses Matter Facebook: May 4-17
A Facebook post is pinned to the top of Our Nurses Matter Facebook page where the public has been sharing their appreciation for BC nurses through photos, artwork, videos, or short comments about the impact of nurses. Feel free to share with others to contribute, check out the responses and even join in with some of your own inspiring accolades.

Province-wide Radio, TV, Social Media and Bus Shelter Ads
A province-wide radio, print and TV message from BCNU President Christine Sorensen will also run starting this Monday, May 11. Special thanks to our media partners their support during COVID-19.

*Submissions may be shared on social media including Twitter which has a maximum character count.
