No Room for Hate Against 2SLGBTQIA+ Children and Youth
BCNU is a strong and committed supporter of safe and inclusive schools for students of all sexual orientations and gender identities (SOGI). SOGI-inclusive education promotes dignity, respect and a more just and equitable society for all.
Amid an organized and ongoing campaign to undermine this safety and inclusivity, we reiterate our support for, and solidarity with, 2SLGBTQIA+ children, youth and community members.
All students have a right to experience the classroom as a welcoming space that reflects and affirms their identity. The campaign to erase the lived experiences and realities of 2SLGBTQIA+ people from our schools and school curricula is an act of hate that directly threatens the safety of 2SLGBTQIA+ children, youth and communities.
As nurses and union members, we add our voice to countless others in calling for the rights of 2SLGBTQIA+ children and youth to be protected, upheld and strengthened – in our classrooms and our communities.
As the BC Human Rights Commissioner reminds us: “Trans and 2SLGBTQIA+ people don’t just have a right to exist—they have a right to thrive, to be loved and to have their human dignity recognized, represented and respected, as we all do.”
