2SLGBTQ+ Caucus Introduces New Name
Indigenous voices central to caucus work
In consultation with BCNU’s Indigenous Leadership Circle and Two-Spirit members, the BCNU caucus formerly known as LGBTQ has announced its new name: 2SLGBTQ+ caucus.
The new name is inclusive of union members who identify as Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Intersex, and other gender and sexual identities that are not heteronormative or cisgender. The “+” includes people who use additional terms as part of gender and sexually diverse communities. “2S” recognizes Two-Spirit people as the first sexual and gender diverse community on Turtle Island. Two-Spirit is a culturally specific identity within some Indigenous communities that reflects a pre-colonial understanding of gender and sexuality within the context of Indigenous culture and spirituality. The 2SLGBTQ+ caucus is committed to centering Indigenous voices in its work and recognizes the power and privilege imbalance of intersecting identities. As allies and partners with BCNU caucuses and networks, it strives toward justice, reconciliation and liberation for all historically oppressed peoples.
