April 28 – Day of Mourning

April 24, 2025

Remembering the lives lost and renewing our commitment to safer workplaces

Each year on April 28, workers, families, employers, and communities gather across the country to honour those who have lost their lives, been injured, or fallen ill due to workplace incidents or exposures. The Day of Mourning is not only a time to remember — it is also a call to action to strengthen our collective commitment to safer workplaces for all.

Sadly, last year in BC, 146 workers died from a workplace injury or disease. There were 68 fatalities due to traumatic injury and 78 fatalities due to occupational disease. The Day of Mourning is a poignant opportunity to reflect on health and safety in the workplace, and the vital importance of illness and injury prevention and worker advocacy.

HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE

Since 1984, Canadians have honoured those who have lost their lives with ceremonies across the country. This year, ceremonies are being held in communities across BC. Visit the Day of Mourning BC website to find one nearest to you.

To honour a fallen worker, visit the virtual dedication wall and make a post or comment on one.

Sadly, nurses experience work hazards each and everyday. We all have a responsibility to contribute to a culture of safety, while recognizing the importance of reporting workplace hazards, incidents and injuries to help ensure the safety of nurses and all health-care workers.

Please be sure to report workplace incidents and near-miss events to the Provincial Workplace Health Contact Centre at 1-866-922-9464. Additionally, the BCNU OHS prevention team is available to assist with your safety questions or concerns. Please contact healthandsafety@bcnu.org.
