Nurses ‘All In’ for Public Health Care in Federal Election

Campaign features tools for nurses to take action

Nurses’ unions across Canada are calling on leaders and candidates from all political parties to protect and strengthen universal public health care ahead of the Apr. 28 federal election.

The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU)’s new campaign, All In for Public Health Care highlights priority issues affecting nurses and their patients. These include the nurse staffing shortage, health care privatization that places profit over care, unsafe long-term care and barriers to affordable care. Look for billboards promoting the campaign and listen for a province-wide radio ad featuring BCNU President Adriane Gear.

The campaign also encourages simple actions BCNU members and the public can take to pressure all political parties to make meaningful investments in public health care. Visit the campaign website to take action now.

Your voting rights

It is important for BCNU members to vote in this election and ensure nurses’ views are heard. Article 36 of the Nurses’ Bargaining Association (NBA) collective agreement entitles employees to four consecutive hours free from work to cast their vote when polls are open, and with no loss of salary for scheduled hours away if they must absent themselves to satisfy this provision.

NBA members should consult their manager to pre-arrange any time off duty if needed. Members covered by other contracts are advised to check their collective agreements.

Federal law also entitles voters to three consecutive hours free from work to cast their ballot on election day. If their hours of work do not allow for three consecutive hours to vote, employers must provide the time off.

Members should direct any questions about their voting rights to their steward.

How to vote

Remember to bring the proper identification to the polls: The Canada Elections Act requires voters to bring one piece of government-issued photo ID, such as a drivers' licence, or two pieces of identification, both containing their name and one containing their address. Those not already registered to vote, or who are unsure if they are registered can visit Elections Canada’s voter registration page or call Elections Canada toll-free at 1-800-463-6868. Voters can also register at their polling place.

You must be a Canadian citizen to vote.
