Support BCNU members running in municipal elections across BC

BCNU is urging members across the province to make their vote count and vote for one of several nurses running for office in the upcoming municipal election this November 15, 2014.

Check in your local newspapers or call your local government office to find out where you vote, and when advance voting occurs. If you are not on a list of registered voters or are unsure, you will need identification in order to vote. Bring two pieces of ID with you that prove where you live - one must include your signature. Find out more information about the upcoming elections, including full candidate lists for your municipality.

The following BCNU members names will be on the ballot in the November 15th municipal election, your support for these local candidates could result in more nurses holding public office:

  • In the City of North Vancouver, Linda Buchanan is a Public Health Nurse and incumbent Councillor. If re-elected she will continue to work on local issues like caring for our aging population and rising housing costs to support the members of her community.
  • Also in the City of North Vancouver, Via Fearnley is an RN who is running for Councillor. Although this is Via's first time standing for election as a candidate, she has more than a decade of political and campaign experience.
  • In Lake Cowichan, Ted Gamble is an LPN seeking election as a Councillor. Ted's vision includes working to attract more assisted-living and long term care facilities to Lake Cowichan. He is committed to helping his community grow in a sustainable manner.
  • In Qualicum Beach, Diana Lamonte is an LPN and first-time candidate who wants to safeguard public health care for all. She has put her name forward after years of advocating for awareness of the social determinants of health in her community.
  • In Kamloops, Cheryl Phippen is running to be a city Councillor. Her platform features three main determinants of health: income/social status, social support networks, and physical environments, which she hopes to influence if elected.
  • In Terrace, Michael Prevost is campaigning with the goal of being elected Councillor. As a Community Health Nurse, and through work with local support organizations, Michael hopes to build partnerships between municipal programs and the people in his community.

This is not a comprehensive list of BCNU members that are running for elected office in this municipal election. This list reflects only those members who applied to BCNU for election candidate support (as per BCNU Members? candidate funding for elections Policy #5.1.29, available on the BCNU Member Portal).
